The squashed-portage project provides the gentoo portage tree as a compressed squashfs image to reduce the size on disk and to improve performance.

The ebuild for the squashed-portage is in our overlay. After emerging the sys-apps/squashed-portage configure the source in your /etc/conf.d/squashed-portage to http://files.j-schmitz.net/squashed-portage/.

Now you can add squashed-portage to your default runlevel and use get-squashed-portage to update your portage tree.
